One of the secrets lies in the use of light colors. Pastels and light colors like cream, ivory, and icy blues will create an illusion of larger and bigger rooms. These colors also make the space open, fresh and well-ventilated because lighter colors reflect more light while darker colors absorb the light.

Lights can also be factors in making rooms seem larger. A well-lighted room helps widen the space.  For windows, you may use shades or panels and go for thin and lightweight curtains instead of heavy ones. It is also essential to open your windows and let the natural light of the outdoors into the room.

The color of the ceiling can either make the room seem smaller or bigger. To achieve that “higher ceiling trick”, avoid painting the ceiling with colors that are attractive to the eyes. Instead, choose neutral colors for the ceiling such as beige, cream, and white. 

 

The use of stripes, narrow vertical stripes in white perhaps, can make a low ceiling appear higher. On the other hand, using of 2 or 3 horizontal stripes can make the room appear longer.  Depending on your choice, stripes can either be painted on the walls or you may paper the walls.

For fabrics and rugs, it is ideal to use smaller prints or plain color. This creates a unified effect and tends to expand the room visually.

The use of mirrors will also help maximize the space in a small room. Use over sized mirrors or a set of smaller mirrors to double the size of the room or to make the room look bigger and to add extra light as well.
